Ultimate Rope Climber

The Story

Ultimate Rope Climber is the life’s work and invention of Darrin Kamp. He was a head wrestling and conditioning coach in the late 90s. The idea for the Ultimate Rope Climber was born in 1998 when Darrin noticed that the 30-foot ropes in his son’s school gymnasium had been removed due to insurance company limitations. The injury to a student who had been climbing one of the ropes led to every rope being removed from all facilities in the local public school system.  Darrin had regularly trained his athletes using the ropes that had hung in their school gym. He recognized that the valuable, full-body workout rope climbing provided was a necessity for student athletes and knew that he needed to find a way to keep training his team with rope climbing. “The rope climbing exercises provided fun competition during our practices— the athletes would race one another to the top and we often used the ropes as part of relay races” recalls Darrin.

Darrin immediately had an idea for a safer alternative by using a rope on a continuous pulley system. He started drafting prototypes and with the help of his brother Kelby was able to bring his idea to life for the first time. The original prototype is still fully functional and in great shape nearly 20 years later. The rope was a unique issue we did not consider. To perfectly splice a rope so it is a seamless, continuous rope proved to be a challenge. Our original prototypes had a large bulge of adhesive to keep the two ends together, which we found frayed and separate with use. Our ropes are still hand braided, spliced and custom made for each of our rope climbing machines. We encountered many problems at every step! Financial problems, licensing problems, getting patents and sales licenses, etc. It was a huge effort to get this product off the ground and to start making sales at the government level.

“I quickly realized that this was going to happen in all the schools and rope climbing might fade away entirely,” Kamp recalls. “My mind immediately started working on how to create an alternative.”

I did not have any engineering background of any kind, but after growing up on a farm and helping my family build their homes I have always been very handy and had a knack for designing useful products. I didn’t research any other products on the market. I simply had a desire and passion to make the concept in my mind a reality. My brother was a mechanic with a garage full of tools and welding equipment and we got to work on the prototype. I worked on this machine in my free time, outside of work and raising a family, and it took around 5 years to get the prototype finished. Which is amazingly still in use with its original parts over 20 years later. We went to work on the first model in 1998 and had it finished in 2002. It was always my intention to make a business out of this product. I sold my first machine in 2007.

The rope has always been a challenging feature of creating this machine. It took us years to find the proper rope. The original models used a rope that was glued together and held together with a thick, unsightly plastic bonding agent. Getting a seamlessly braided continuous rope of over 50 feet in length proved to be challenging. All machines come with a hand braided eight-strand rope. This is a handmade rope that cannot be created with a machine.

We have overcome many challenges, from obtaining proper licenses and trademarks to creating a seamless, 34-foot rope that runs smoothly through the machine. It been a long journey thus far but we’ve built up our muscle and stamina to keep climbing higher!

Our Mission

We offer a safe, unique piece of extremely durable equipment that features a simple, sleek design. We want to share the joy of our unique workout equipment and hope to share it with gyms and athletes around the world.

HOW IT WORKS

The Ultimate Rope Climber is designed with a smooth, continuous rope feed system that allows you to climb as far as your muscles can take you. On the URC450 Base Model, select the desired speed and then flip the Power toggle switch to the ON position. The speed can be adjusted from Slow, to Medium, to Fast.

On the URC680 Premium Model, begin by standing on the center platform. The rope is set into motion once your feet leave the platform.  Begin climbing and watch the time display as you climb, to monitor your rope climbing progress. See how much longer you can go during each session. The rope will automatically stop moving when your feet contact the weight-sensitive platform.

The emergency Shut OFF button will immediately stop the rope from moving when pressed. For more info, watch our Get Started training video.

Benefits of Rope Climbing

Rope climbing is an intuitive, total-body exercise that’s tough to beat when it comes to effectiveness. Among its benefits:

IMPROVES UPPER-BODY AND CORE MUSCULAR STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE.

  • Biceps and forearms – Bending and extending the arms to pull the body higher on the rope is a different dynamic than many traditional free weight exercises. In fact, due to the unstable nature of the rope, rope climbing engages the core and legs more than standard pull-ups.
  • Back – The lats, rhomboids and trapezius are key in pulling the body up from an extended arm position to bent elbows.
  • Core – The abs and low back function to stabilize the body on a small surface area that freely moves.
  • Grip – Holding the rope and supporting one’s weight for an extended period, while progressively resisting gravity as one climbs higher, is an intense grip strengthener.

Increases coordination and agility.

Incorporating the upper body, core and lower-body to move in sync as a unit to pull and push against gravity to ascend the rope requires coordination and agility.

Delivers total-body, high-intensity, low-impact exercise.

Working all the major muscle groups and lifting one’s own body weight, rope climbing is an effective challenge without any repetitive pounding on the joints.

Enhances proprioception.

Moving and controlling the body while working against gravity and the instability of the rope fine-tunes awareness of the body’s position and movement.

Builds mental strength and confidence.

Hanging on a rope stimulates stamina, determination and mental toughness; progressing toward and ultimately achieving what one formally couldn’t accomplish boosts confidence.
